Horror-comedy that harks back to seventies cinema with the idea of centering the film during Jack Delroy's late show. The context is also given of how the TV hosts competed with each other based on ratings, the "rivalry" between Delroy and the legendary Carson, therefore a film that talks about greed, about how to achieve success at any cost, even obscure, online with several films on the theme.
The Cairnes, the director couple, have already directed entertaining horror-comedies, such as Scare Campaign, from a technical point of view the work is noticeable in making the film appear like a real episode of the late night, the subjective problem is that this may not seem very cinematic because everything is deliberately and purposely televised.
The film shows the succession of guests of the late night in the Halloween episode up to Lilly, a young girl, who she says she is possessed by a demon.
The late night episode continues between sceptics, inexplicable paranormal moments, tricks, revelations and life traits of esotericists that emerge in Delroy.
The moment of Lily-demon it's quite ironic and also entertaining for what it says, when then in the end the film has to show horror, despite fully understanding the intent, it comes off as a bit generic, perhaps it's the matrix itself from which the film is born that doesn't grab me a lot, its being television, therefore the demon behaves like many others seen in films and the abundant CGI does not do it too much justice.
However there are good moments even in this situation, the slit throat works well and is appreciable as the film then changes frame rate, from 4:3 to cinema format to show Delroy's mental delirium.
There is an effective suggestive scene, with the sect present on the stage and the film can also be read as a revenge movie, the price of Delroy's success, the sacrifice, now demands the bill, it is up to the viewer to decide whether it is all true or whether it is Delroy's distorted mind that generates the final disaster.
So there are nice aspects and moments but From how they talked about it I expected more, it's not the much-vaunted horror of the year, I understand the whole context and what the film depicts but all of this, in part, castrates the more cinematic ambitions and the more surreal, visionary moments that the film could have had.
It's not a bad film, but I wish I liked it more.
